Recognising a scam can be difficult sometimes, as scammers try to make their emails or points of contact look as legitimate as possible. Lottery scam emails and documents, will usually be very general in how they address the recipient, usually starting off with 'Attention XXX', 'Dear Sir/Ma'am' or 'Dear joe_b'. This is because they are made in bulk, usually by a program that will automatically write and send the emails/letters.
Scams will also be very urgent or pushy for you to sign up to the service they are offering or to collect on the 'prize' that you have won, usually by saying that the offer ends soon or that your prize will expire within a day or two of you receiving the email unless you pay a fee to claim it. We have found recently that some letters will state 'You have unclaimed winnings or funds, please claim immediately' and give you an amount of anything from a few dollars to a few million.
If you are sure an email or letter you have received is a scam, the best option would be to block the sender or set up a filter to stop any future messages.
